Music

Music at Benedict House Preparatory School is accessible to all children, regardless of age or prior experience, with singing at the heart of our music curriculum. Through song, pupils develop confidence, creativity and wellbeing, exploring a wide range of musical styles from classical to pop and music from cultures around the world. Both solo and ensemble singing play an important role in building self assurance, while our weekly singing assembly for Prep pupils fosters a strong sense of community and shared enjoyment.

Children regularly take part in memorable musical experiences, including musicals, Nativity performances and large scale events such as singing as part of a choir of 9,000 at the O2. Instrumental music is also a key feature of our curriculum. Pre Prep children explore sound through a wide variety of classroom percussion, while pupils in Year 3 learn to play the violin, viola or cello in small groups, with instruments provided free of charge by the school. In Year 4, children learn the glockenspiel, in Year 5 the recorder and in Year 6 the ukulele.

In addition, many pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 choose to take individual instrumental or singing lessons with our specialist peripatetic staff. We celebrate every talent and provide frequent opportunities for performance, with some pupils holding Equity cards for acting and singing, reflecting the breadth and quality of musical opportunities at Benedict House.
